I didn't know what the LTB was

No lies.

Good morning / 早上好 / Bonjour / ਸ਼ੁਭ ਸਵੇਰ / Buen día friend!

In this edition of CEO Notes at Openroom: upcoming Ontario Landlord conference in October and me teaching debt enforcement techniques (live & free) next week.

🔥 Hot Opportunity: Community Gathering in Ontario

I’d like to invite you to the upcoming Small Ownership Landlords of Ontario conference on Saturday, October 24, 2026.

If you’re a small-to-medium sized property manager / landlord, a realtor, paralegal, aspiring landlord, homeowner who rents out your basement, or a renter who may be curious about what a rental business could look like - please take this seriously.

I’ll be there early in the morning delivering on some behind-the-scenes insights in the rental industry that we’ve never shared before. It’ll be exclusive for this conference.

The importance of community and building your circle

5 years ago, ~40 us got into a party room of someone’s downtown Toronto for the very first time. It was the start of a tiny little advocacy group called the Small Ownership Landlords of Ontario (SOLO).

Prior to that gathering in the condo room, Rose Marie on the SOLO team was the person who picked up my call when I was bawling my eyes out trying to figure out what to do with this thing called the “LTB”.

Embarrassing but I quite literally didn’t even know there was a landlord and tenant board that dealt with disputes when I got into rentals.

I mean, why would someone decide to not pay rent, deliberately?

Young and naive me learned the hard way now. 😩

Rose spoke to me so many times when I was panicking about what to do within the two years I was experiencing unpaid rent from my former tenants. She shared tips with me and her team taught me things I never knew.

Weiting joining the SOLO Board of volunteers in 2025 at Queens Park, Ontario for advocacy day

Their Board members and volunteers would take me along to go to Queens Park together to say ‘hi’ to politicians and helped progress Openroom’s mission of transparency to greater heights.

Now, the SOLO team has expanded from a small 40-person gathering in that condo room to over 8,000 people in their Facebook group. This has led to a need to bring folks together from across Ontario for an intimate conference where the space can hold more of us in person together.

About the SOLO team:

  • This team created a hotline where distressed landlords called in multiple times not knowing what to do or you simply need resources. You are truly a name and not a number, they would call back people multiple times to ensure you were okay. It’s +1-647-792-4951.

  • This team will drive 2+ hours to your rental to provide emotional support during eviction day. It’s ultra nerve-racking on eviction day because at one point, it’s almost hard to believe you’re getting your house back after going through months of tenants not paying rent.

  • This team runs a free community Facebook group where thousands of questions have been answered by other seasoned housing providers.

Did I mention that this team does everything free of charge?!

NO ONE on their Board earns a single dollar. They also don’t charge their members anything.

Guys, it’s been 5 years and they are still on volunteer time because this mission to support great landlords is CRITICAL. 😭

While this group is focused on support landlords, the end results in better rental housing for great tenants.

What do you say? I would love to see you in-person in two months! Learn more.

p.s. if you sign up, reply to this email letting me know you’ve signed up and I’ll personally prepare you an Openroom goodie bag to give to you on the Saturday!

📚 Free Webinar: Have rental debt owed to you? It’s time to our best share tips.

Over the last 4 years, I’ve been asked over a thousand different questions about rental debt enforcement - from both TENANTS who are owed by their landlord as well as from LANDLORDS who are owed by their tenants.

Naturally, my Co-Founder Vishal asked me if I wanted to do a free session to share what we know so we can reach more people and equip you with the knowledge we wish we had 5 years ago.

I said “aw man, do I have to give away our secrets?!”

Just kidding. Of course I said ‘“yes!”

This upcoming Wednesday, September 2, 2026 at 7:00 PM EST, join me and our friends Kristen & Edmond from Legacy Legal LLP on Zoom. All Provinces are welcome to join as most material covered works throughout Canada, though some parts will be using Ontario as an example.

There will be no recordings for it.
