Ontario to release all LTB records dating back to 2021

Good morning / 早上好 / Bonjour / ਸ਼ੁਭ ਸਵੇਰ / Buen día friend!
In this edition of CEO Notes at Openroom: the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General released 40,844 Landlord and Tenant Board Records on Friday to the public.
🔥 Hot Off the Press
Browse through 40,844 public records between Jan 2026 - Dec 2026. You can use the Data Visualizer below to search for orders related to a specific person or business name, rental address, order type, or application type.
I made a little 1-min video about the news. Too long, didn’t watch?
Basically, the Ontario (Canada) Ministry of the Attorney General will be releasing, in the months to come, every rental dispute tribunal order dating back to 2021.
This is a bittersweet moment
Back in September 2022, Co-Founder Vishal and I started a little one-page website that pioneered the use of Landlord and Tenant Board Tribunal Records for screening.
It started with me uploading 5 of my own orders: N4s (non-payment of rent) and N12s (personal use). This was Openroom’s very first record ever.

It snowballed into a humongous community effort of crowdsourced public orders from Ontario, but also the rest of Canada.
And then it brought on copycats. We may have different operating ethos but I’m still flattered.
What the last 3 years have taught me is that the rental industry has so many elements I don’t know. So so much yet to learn.
The most important reality check was that there is a human behind every single order. And many times it’s not so black and white. Definitely not for the faint of heart.
Co-Founder Vishal and I have done very specific things within Openroom that upset certain Openroom members because we wanted to protect the innocent.
For example, we wanted to ensure tenants who won their cases don’t get flagged as litigious - like what if your landlord took you to court again and again just because they felt like it but they never won?
Or, how we’ve tried to get ahead of identity mismatches - like what if you had the same name as someone who exists on the record but it wasn’t you?
Why did we care so much? It’s just a name.
Well, I would be lying if I told you I haven’t broken down hearing some of the real-life situations that have come across my desk. There were days I had to take a mental health break.
There are absolutely people who game the system, and there are also people who are truly being taken advantage of. The latter consists of people who are the most vulnerable.
I’ve always told my team that we need to work so hard and so smart that one day we are no longer needed. That’s when we know we’ve done the best we can.
So will we still be needed?
While I’ve always pushed for open data access, I also believe there should be more oversight of this kind of data to prevent it from being weaponized.
One day, I will share more of the thousands of hours of advocacy work we did (with so many of you) behind-the-scenes to make this release of the data possible.
For now, it’s extremely bittersweet in more ways than I can express in this weekend’s newsletter.
You need to know that without you, the release of the data would have never been possible. Look at the results of our grassroots movement together.
Wow.
Thank you everyone for following along this journey so far, and for continuing to!
I promise there is more to come because the real work is now just starting.
