Why'd you make it so complicated?
Pay rent. Finish maintenance. Right?

Good morning / 早上好 / Bonjour / ਸ਼ੁਭ ਸਵੇਰ / Buen día friend!
In this edition of CEO Notes at Openroom, I want you to have a good laugh today and share BureauEdge (the best we’ve got to offer) with you. You’re receiving this email because you’re part of the Openroom Community - thank you!
Co-Founder Vishal joked around last year and said we should make a song about what we see in the rental industry.
I took him too seriously and made it happen. I might have gone overboard. Watch it on Youtube.
After you watch it, please reply back and let me know what you thought of it. Share this email with a friend if you loved it. If you hated it, I still thank you for taking the time to watch it.
Weiting, give me something more helpful!
OK! In more serious terms, my team at Openroom is committed to bringing further education to you this 2026.
To start off, I wanted to share knowledge about the Debtor’s Examination in the Ontario Small Claims Court because it’s one of the ways to recover back debt!
Yikes, just look at this $368M of unpaid debt in the last 5 years!

There are $368M owed in rental arrears across all Ontario court orders in Openroom - as of Jan 21, 2026
We made the educational video in partnership with Courtready.ca. Their team builds practical tools and lessons for self-represented litigants across Canada.
I’m teaching this topic because it hits home. It’s been 4 years since my own bad tenancy dispute with unpaid rent of over $35,000. I was in and out of Small Claims Court with my legal team last year doing the debtor’s examination.
I know that Openroom community members consists of landlords who are owed money from tenants but there are also tenants who are owed money from their landlords. We hear you!
The good thing about this enforcement technique is that it doesn’t discriminate. If you are owed money as a Creditor, you can consider this as an option.
🛎️ Introducing BureauEdge by Openroom
In latter 2025, we called on some of our superfan property management members of the Openroom community to experience BureauEdge - the best of what Openroom has to offer to property management teams to differentiate their business.
BureauEdge allows you to link your lease to your resident's credit history just like a credit card or mortgage. Every lease becomes a tradeline in their credit history to boost the credit score. Every late or unpaid debt (e.g. rent, utilities, storage, parking fees) carries serious consequences - with or without a court order, for current or past residents.
How does it work?
1 - Sync your leases to Openroom | We plug in to your property management software and automatically sync your leases and payment history. If you don't use any software, we have a custom import workflow made just for you. | ![]() |
2 - You decide who to reward | You can control which residents are eligible for credit building and perks. Open a tradeline for all of your lease or only for those you want to reward. | ![]() |
3 - You decide when to escalate | When rental arrears are starting to get out of control and negotiations are not working, you decide when to add a collections line to your resident's consumer credit report. | ![]() |
If you’re interested in learning more, let’s find some time to chat. Or, help us by forwarding this to a property manager you know!
Here’s to a great 2026 - see you in my next memo!

We enable you to screen tenants or future landlords, help you report rental debt, give rewards to great residents, or bundle it all into BureauEdge.
We also educate about rental housing and we advocate for a more transparent and connected rental ecosystem to support both responsible housing providers and residents.
