What I Wish I Knew Before My Tenancy Dispute

Let's aim for education of high quality, with deep insights, and from reputable subject matter experts

Good morning / 早上好 / Bonjour / ਸ਼ੁਭ ਸਵੇਰ / Buen día friend!

Today’s Openroom Co-Founder Newsletter where we take you behind the scenes as we build Openroom with you, our community, is brought to you by our friends at:

Duuo - Tenant Insurance that provides coverage for a range of different items including laptops, furniture, clothing, and collectible items. This is the insurance that tenants, technically speaking, must have while renting. There is no annual fee and no cancellation fee, just simply month-to-month like many tenancy agreements.

At Openroom, we aggregate tenancy court orders across Canada, extract information from them, and put it to public use (e.g. search registry, impact credit history).

🤔 What’s going on at the sheriff’s office?

On Wednesday, May 7, 2025 at 7:00 PM EST, we are welcoming an Ontario Sheriff to join us online for an exclusive Q&A session. This Sheriff handles hundreds of evictions in a given year in the Barrie-Muskoka region.

Priority access for Openroom Plus Members, Durham Landlords Association Members, and Verified SOLO members. Only 100 spots available. RSVP now →.

👩🏻 Top insight from me, Co-Founder Weiting

Back when I was going through my tenancy dispute, I let myself down when I didn’t know how to navigate the rental business, the legal jargon, or the tenancies act.

I landed in big trouble before I spent thousands of hours diving into what I should have known.

I can’t rewind to change the past but I can prepare (or overprepare) for the future.

While Openroom builds software to hold people accountable for their actions, we also set out to educate each other. This is part of our mission in building towards a CONNECTED rental ecosystem.

Whether it’s for responsible housing providers or for responsible renters, we are working on education of high quality, with deep insights, and from reputable subject matter experts - FREE.

Co-Founder Vishal and I believe that the more each of us know, the more we can each make more informed decisions, and altogether we can elevate each other to do better in this rental ecosystem and in the housing crisis.

We worked with Joanna Lang, Chris Seepe, and Rong-Wei Alec Yu (for mandarin speakers) to bring you our first set of educational video & written content on fake documents, lease clauses, and general rental property basics - respectively.

I see these cater more towards the housing provider but a couple of tenant/renter courses are coming up next month.

I need your help!

  • ❤️ I’d love to know if you find any of the three courses valuable yourself, or if you shared it with a friend.

  • 💡 If there’s a topic/language you believe we should cover, please send it to me.

  • 🎤 If you want to speak about a topic, reply back to this email.

This week, I was at PM SpringFest and met many folks from across Canada. British Columbia to Nova Scotia. “We’re a Canadian business!” was mentioned often, and I love supporting Canadian businesses.

I also went to a FRPO Residential Tenancies Act learning session and met some large firms who are searching inside Openroom on the daily.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you, Openroom fans, for getting us to where we are today. We wouldn’t be here without you.

p.s. Monday, April 28, 2025 (tomorrow) is our Canadian election day. Cast your ballot during a span of 12 hour time frame across Canada.

Voting hours at polling stations for each time zone across Canada
